We were given a special hard-hat tour of the Rubin Museum of Art.

Throughout the year, Circle tours go behind-the-scenes of some of New York’s most interesting historic properties. Some tours require hard hats to visit projects during restoration, while others showcase completed restorations of commercial buildings, residences, museums, churches, and synagogues. On occasion, conservators, engineers, and craftspeople open their studios to our Circle members.

Eldridge Street Project
Wednesday, March 28, 2007
12 Eldridge Street, NY, NY

Eldridge Street Synagogue opened in 1887 as the first great house of worship built by Eastern European Jews in America. But the historic site suffered from deterioration and near abandonment until the nonprofit Eldridge Street Project began a major restoration in 1986. Today, the synagogue is a National Historic Landmark.

A team of preservation architects led this tour.

Solar One
Wednesday, April 25, 2007
2420 FDR Drive, Service Road East, NY, NY

In May 2003, the Community Environmental Center opened Solar One, the City's first solar-powered "Green Energy, Arts, and Education Center." The complex maintains Stuyvesant Cove Park, a two-acre park on the banks of the East River, which it also uses for energy. Solar One hosts solar-powered film, dance, and music performances and offers education programs for youth. Architects Kiss & Cathcart handled the build-out of Solar One and its many energy and resource saving features.

Chris Collins, Executive Director, led this tour.
