Congregation Tifereth Israel - Corona, Queens

Congregation Tifereth Israel serves the the growing Bukharian Jewish population of the Corona section of Queens.

A July 2005 celebration marked the kick-off of $900,000 in City and state funding for exterior and interior restorations, substantially facilitated by the Conservancy.

Synagogue leadership thanked the Conservancy for its help in a ceremony.

Since 1998, the Conservancy has worked with Congregation Tifereth Israel in Queens. We have provided preservation consultant referrals, performed site visits, funded a conditions survey by Jablonski Berkowitz Conservation, and helped the congregation reach out to potential funders. The synagogue was designated a Queensmark in 1999 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Now they are raising the estimated $200,000 to repair the roof and windows, create a second fire exit, and restore the original wood shingle siding. The Conservancy has supported the roof restoration, the first phase of work, with a $10,000 grant.
