Preserving Sacred Sites
The Sacred Sites Program provides financial and technical assistance for the maintenance, repair, and restoration of religious properties of all denominations throughout New York State.
Through three grant programs, the Sacred Sites Program has awarded over $4.6 million in matching funds, making a difference for nearly 600 landmark-quality religious properties. In addition, Sacred Sites staff helps religious institutions analyze building problems; refer congregations to qualified architects, engineers, contractors, and craftspeople; review specifications and bids; and develop long-term maintenance and restoration plans.
Sacred Sites also assists historic religious properties through educational resources. The Conservancy produces publications directed toward historic religious properties, such as Managing Repair & Restoration Projects: A Congregation's How-to Guide and Common Bond, a technical journal. Recent workshops topics have included historic burial grounds, initiating restoration projects, reducing energy costs, and making buildings accessible, as well as a special workshop, "Roof, Boilers & Budgets" in Fishkill, NY.
